Avoid a costly and potentially dangerous situation; call Miss Dig before you do any kind of digging, whether it is for a new tree in your yard or excavation for a new building or structure. Most natural gas lines and many other utilities are buried underground with no way for the average do-it-yourselfer to identify their location. Be sure to call Miss Dig at 1-800-482-7171 three days prior to digging holes or excavating for any reason. Experts will be sent out to mark underground utility lines to protect you from dangerous mistakes, and since there's no cost for this service, there's really no reason not to. So remember, next time that you plan to dig on your property call Miss Dig to locate underground utility lines. Not only is it a good idea, it's the law.

Have the following checklist ready before you call:
  • County, City or Township
  • Location of Work - Street Address
  • Intersecting Streets/Roads
  • Distance From Intersection/Direction
  • Extent of Work Front/Rear/Both Sides
  • Date of Excavation
  • Start Time of Excavation
  • Type of Work
  • Caller's Name
  • Contractor/Contact Number
  • Contact Person/Additional Information
WHAT IS MISS DIG?
HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

MISS DIG is a statewide, one-call notification system, which was formed in 1970 in Oakland County by five major utilities. The reason for MISS DIG's formation was to prevent damage to utility facilities and to provide excavators and the general public with the ability to inform multiple owners of underground facilities of intended non-emergency and emergency excavation via a single telephone call.

MISS DIG is not a utility. MISS DIG owns no facilities, has no record of facility locations and does not locate underground facilities. It is a message handling service that receives location requests from persons excavating. Each utility is responsible for marking its own facilities.

WHEN TO USE MISS DIG

Michigan's statute, Act 53 of Public Act 1974, requires anyone who engages in or is responsible for the planning or performance of any type of excavation e.g.; grading, demolition, cultivating, augering, blasting, or boring to provide advance notice of at least three full working days to MISS DIG. MISS DIG must be called prior to excavation in order to comply with the state statute.

MISS DIG is open 24 hours to take requests. Emergency and non-emergency calls will be accepted.
If any of the following situations occur, the caller should contact the facility owner(s) directly.

  • To report damage to any type of facility.
  • To resolve any type of damage billing problem.
  • To request any type of facility removal or relocation, including meter removals prior to demolition of a building.
  • To request any type of utility service.
