Q: Is Natural Gas available in my area?
A: Please contact us at 517-265-2144 or email infocgfc_account@dteenergy.com with your address, and we will provide you with the requested information. Please refer to the Service Area Map below.
Q: How do I get natural gas service to my home?
A: Simply call us or send an email with your address, nearest crossroad(s), and preferred meter location. We will take care of the rest. Our team will schedule a site visit to assess your service requirements and provide an accurate cost for installing an underground gas service to your home or business. Once payment is received, we will proceed with the installation of your service line.
Q: How much does it cost to run a natural gas service line to my home?
A: If Citizens Gas has never provided service to your property, we welcome you as a new customer and require only a contribution to the total installation cost.
Standard Charges for New Service:
- Connection fee: $200.00
- Footage cost: $3.00 per foot, measured from the centerline of the road.
Additional New Service (same property/address):
- Connection fee: $800.00
- Footage cost: $3.00 per foot, measured from the centerline of the road.
Beginning in late fall, additional charges may apply during periods of inclement weather.
Standard Charges for New Service During Inclement Weather Period:
- Connection fee: $400.00
- Footage cost: $4.50 per foot, measured from the centerline of the road.
Additional New Service (same property/address) During Inclement Weather Period:
- Connection fee: $1,000.00
- Footage cost: $4.50 per foot, measured from the centerline of the road.
NOTE: Services that fall outside of normal construction conditions may incur additional charges to cover extra expenses.
Q: Why is the inclement weather rate charged?
A: Inclement weather rate is applied to offset the additional costs associated with mud, snow, ice, and other weather-related conditions. These conditions require extra time for site preparation, installation, and equipment cleanup. We monitor conditions and determine when to implement this charge, usually around November.
Q: How long will it take to get a new natural gas service line installed?
A: We typically operate within a 2-to-3-week lead-time installation. However, during exceptionally busy times, such as spring or fall, these lead-times can extend beyond the norm.
Q: Why do I need to disclose information regarding buried obstructions?
A: It is especially important to disclose any underground obstructions for several reasons:
- Safety: Our top priority is safety. Striking an underground utility unexpectedly can have serious consequences.
- Cost: Damages and any resulting expenses from undisclosed buried obstructions are the sole responsibility of the homeowner.
- Delays: Hidden obstructions can cause project delays, which may further increase costs.
Q: Are there restrictions where the gas meter can be installed on my house?
A: Yes. Gas Meter Location Requirements are as follows:
Placement
- Must be located on the front or side of the house.
- Not permitted on the back of the house.
Clearances
- Maintain at least 3 feet from:
- Electric service equipment
- Vents or air intakes
- Operable windows
Accessibility
- Location must be easily accessible for:
- Meter reading
- Repair/Service work
- Emergency gas shut-off
- Area must be free of obstructions (e.g., fences, shrubs, stored items).
Q: What is an AEP Program and how does it work?
A: AEP stands for Area Expansion Program. From time to time, main extensions are required to serve customers in areas that do not align with Citizens’ standard cost recovery model. Customers agree to make a one-time, upfront lump-sum payment and pay an additional charge per CCF of gas consumed to cover construction costs. These agreements are typically established for a term of 10 years. Your account representative will be able to help you identify if you are in an AEP area, what charges apply, and for how long.
