METER READING

Q: Why does Citizens Gas estimate my gas usage periodically?

A: While we strive to obtain an actual reading of your gas meter each month, there may be circumstances that prevent us from doing so. These circumstances include, but are not limited to:

  • Severe weather conditions
  • Illness or unavailability of meter reading personnel

In such cases, we may issue an estimated bill for your gas usage. Estimates are calculated based on:

  • Your usage during the same month in the previous year
  • Adjustments for changes in weather conditions

When an actual meter reading is obtained in the following month, the estimate will be verified, and your account will be adjusted if necessary.

Q: How does the Meter Reader read my meter from their vehicle?

A: Many gas meters installed by Citizens Gas are equipped with an ERT (Encoder Receiver Transmitter). These devices are small radio transmitters that send the meter reading to a computer installed in the meter reading vehicle.

Key points about ERTs:

  • The meter still includes standard dials for manual reading if necessary.
  • ERT technology improves efficiency by allowing meter readers to collect more readings in less time.
  • This process helps reduce labor costs and enhances overall reliability with accurate readings.
Q: Why can’t I plant bushes and shrubs around my meter?

A: You may plant shrubs near your gas meter if you follow the required clearance specifications:

  • Plan for the mature size of the shrub to ensure proper spacing.
  • Maintain at least:
    • 18 inches of clearance on each side of the gas meter.
    • 36 inches of clearance in front or above the gas meter.

Clear access to the gas meter is essential for:

  • Meter reading
  • Maintenance
  • Emergency response

Important:
Do not allow the shut-off valve, located at the base of the gas meter, to become covered with dirt, stone, mulch, concrete, or asphalt.

Q: When is my meter read?

A: Our customers are organized into several billing cycles. All customers within the same cycle will have their gas bills due around the same day each month.

According to the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) rules, you are entitled to receive your bill at least 21 days before the due date. To meet this requirement:

  • We typically read your meter 7 to 11 days before you receive your bill.
  • The actual meter reading date is printed on your bill for your reference.

This process ensures timely and accurate billing in compliance with state regulations.
